About Commercial Nursery
Commercial Nursery was formed by two brothers, Iain and Chris Hiscock, in 2005 and is situated in Godalming near Guildford in Surrey.
The goals of the company are to trade across the Atlantic Ocean bringing in new plant products from the well established USA company, Commercial Nursery in Tennessee, owned by Iain, but founded by Hubert Nicholson in 1900.
Iain studied at Merrist Wood College, during which time he spent one year in the US returning to Commercial Nursery after completing his degree in horticulture, to gain further experience. In fact he stayed 28 years, purchasing the company after 20 years from Hubert Nicholson on his retirement.
Commercial Nursery in the Tennessee foothills of the Appalachion Mountains is one of the most experienced producers, growing dogwoods for over 50 years. Their staff, which included dogwood propagators with 30 years experience, know how to grow, dig , pack and ship plants to ensure quality and customer satisfaction. The Tennessee climate is ideal, and its soil encourages a fibrous root system. In addition, they maintain the most modern equipments and facilities including irrigation.
Iain now concentrates on establishing a market for newer and more improved plant species and cultivars, which have been introduced into the US trade in recent years. His experience in growing bare root, which are shipped to the UK company, enables them to offer the very best quality.
The British subsidiary sells to the wholesale trade in 5 to 50 litre sizes. The aim is to produce a potted plant which is rare, of high quality and competitively priced.
Commercial Nursery specialise in the newer Cornus and Cercis resistant to powdery mildew and anthracnose (discula destructive). New varieties of Cornus include: Cornus Florida 'Eternal' and Cornus Florida 'Firebird'. Their newest, with US patent pending, is Cercis Canadensis 'Hearts of Gold' redbud.
In the UK, Commercial Nursery are still a young company, but expanding year by year. This year they have shipped to Italy and their aim is the sell 10% into Europe. The company are also widening their range and have introduced Taxodium: a weeping bald cyprus and a Betula Nigra a weeping birch with beautiful exfoliating bark. Also introducing several new cultivars of Ginkgo; top grafted and ideal for patio plants and also a new dwarf cultivar.
Commercial Nursery's consistent high quality and new plant species and cultivars, sets them apart from any potential competitors. With ever changing climate, Commercial Nursery will continue to be innovative in controlling pest, disease and fungal conditions that in the past have been a problem with these plants.
They feel that their plants are aimed at the growing number of gardeners who are keen to try something new and delight in growing something unusual.
